Zoo

Zoo is a new touring exhibition of video works and photographs by Richard Billingham.

This project has been developed over almost two years, from June 2004-to May 2006. Billingham was commissioned by VIVID to develop a number of video and colour photographic studies in zoos across the world, including Antwerp, Bristol, Buenos Aires, Dallas, Dudley, Madrid and Rome. During this process, he has explored concepts such as the viewing relationship between captive animals and their public ‘audience’, and the psychological space of the zoo enclosure. Drawing on his acclaimed eye for emotional detail, Billingham has spent considerable time closely monitoring the behaviours of captive animals in different, though always contained, settings. Some of the works consider the exotic and the rare; others, such as a study of the red squirrel, deal with the more common place. The ambition of the exhibition is to create a compelling, physical presence in the space and to provide an emotionally and psychologically charged experience for the viewer. The presentation of individual works will pose a number of questions pertinent to notions of captivity, ‘the natural’ and the artificial, and our physical relationship to these notions.

Zoo is available for hire from May - Aug 2007 and Dec 07 onwards.
