During the ISP programme Deepres collaborated with film-maker Michael Clifford to research and develop the emotional and physical experiences associated with sports related activity including marathon running and football crowds. The intention of the presentation at VIVID is to create an immersive audio-visual environment within which the viewer can undertake a shared psychological experience.
Subsequent to the completion of Runner - originally commissioned for The Great North Run Moving Image Commission - Deepres and Clifford are showing some of this work in non-gallery spaces such as gyms. The film will be shown to treadmill users, the activity will be documented and runners interviewed to gauge any resulting physical or psychological influences.
Project History and Development
Deepres aimed to work closely with a runner and a sports psychologist to investigate ways of representing long distance running through the moving image, drawing on expertise from the sports world to develop a greater understanding of the experience of long distance running both from a physical and psychological point of view. Deepres' research contributed to the artist's Great North Run Moving Image Commission (awarded to Ravi Deepres and Michael Baig-Clifford) and inspired the development of new video works based on crowds and individuals at large scale sporting events.
