Day Science/Night ScienceInstallation, University of Birmingham

The installation is viewable 24 hours a day, although it is recommended to visit at around dusk to get the best of both aspects of the installation.

Day Science/Night Science is located at the IRC Net Shape Centre, on the University of Birmingham’s North Campus. Building G7 in the Green Zone of the campus map.

By Car

From the A38 (Bristol Road South) turn onto Edgbaston Park Road. Shortly after passing the Barber Institute on your left, turn left onto Pritchatts Road. The Net Shape Centre is on your right, set away from the road just after the tall building with the large satellite dish. Depending on when you visit, parking is available either on Pritchatts Road itself or in one of the University car parks (use the intercom on the barrier to ask for access to visit the installation at the Net Shape Centre).

 By Train

There are frequent services from Birmingham New Street to University station. On leaving University station, turn right and then right again at the roundabout onto Vincent Drive. Walk down the hill past the hospital buildings and then up to the mini roundabout to turn right onto Pritchatts Road.

Pass the Department of Metallurgy and Materials on your left and then turn left onto the footpath immediately after it. The Net Shape Centre is the aluminium-clad building with the large windows.

This route will take about 10 minutes. Alternatively you might want to download a university map and walk across the campus.

 By Bus

Several buses stop on Pritchatts Road, including the 21 and the 46 from the city centre.

  Project Outline:

Nikki Pugh worked alongside Geoffrey Dolman of the Functional Materials Group, Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Birmingham between November 2006 and July 2007. During this time she familiarised herself with several of the techniques used within the research group and worked on a series of small-scale projects responding to the people and processes she encountered.

The culmination of this work was the site-specific installation Day Science/Night Science situated at the Net Shape Centre – the department’s main industrial research facility. Pulling together strands from history, Pugh’s own background and the work of the Functional Materials Group, Day Science/Night Science has a two-part form with different emphases during the day and during the night reflecting different characteristics of creative activity. View a slideshow of images of the installation.

Pugh and Dolman are now developing printed documentation that maps the residency as a whole.
