VIVID Facilities Production Case Study
In 2005 artist Layla Curtis received a VIVID commission to develop a new work titled Sky Drawings (Night, Day). The concept was to produce a dual video projection depicting the activity of air traffic in the sky. One projection showing the inky black background of the night’s sky filled with the blinking lights of overhead air traffic moving across the frame. The other projection revealing the clear blue sky of the day, across which the residual, white vapour trails of aeroplanes traverse the surface in a gradual obliteration of the screen.
Layla approached VIVID with a specific idea of the subject of the film and how she thought it should look. VIVID’s production facilitator, Matthew Higginbottom, provided the knowledge and experience of video production and technical requirements for capturing and composing the material, working closely with the artist from initial project conception through to exhibition.
Post production took place at VIVID between February and July 2006 using Adobe After Effects to clean up the flight paths from sky backgrounds using mattes and remove camera shake and render the footage out.
Post production work was also carried out on 5 video works filmed by Layla Curtis as part of her British Antarctic Research Survey residency. Work included editing, camera steadying and clean up, synching of dual screen pieces and dvd authoring for sync unit installation. The work was recently exhibited at the New Art Gallery Walsall and is set to tour in 2007.
